When people think about a water crisis, they usually imagine dried-up reservoirs and failed monsoons.
But the next water crisis may not start with a drought at all.
It could begin in cities where water demand is growing faster than the infrastructure needed to support it.
The Real Challenge
As cities expand, more water is needed for homes, offices, hotels, hospitals, and commercial complexes.
At the same time, much of the water supplied to buildings is used only once before being discharged as wastewater.
This creates a surprising situation: cities continue searching for new water sources while millions of gallons of used water drain every day.
Looking Ahead
As urban populations grow, the focus is slowly shifting from finding more water to using existing water more efficiently. In the future, wastewater may become one of the most valuable resources cities already have.
